Our own Iowahawk actually laid his own eyes on the car that launched a thousand off-key gearheads to stand around in a garage in matching denim shorts, Bud Lights in-paws and sing as many stanzas of the most beloved hot rod song as they can remember: Charlie Ryan’s Hot Rod Lincoln (here). It’s neat to see some snaps of this iconic car –– we had no idea that it really existed and it’s not too terribly far from what we’d imagined it looked like. Not sure about the 45-adorned spare being present in those daydreams, but hey –– be careful when you meet your heroes… Keep checking back with the ‘hawk for more reveals! BILL MONROE RULESThursday, July 15th, 2010
We got to talking the other day about the perfect ridgerunner –– in other words, a liquor car. In other words, a car built to run moonshine from the still to the buyer. Now, while we pretty much came to the overwhelming conclusion that the perfect ridgerunner is either a hot ‘40 Ford coupe or a ‘57 Ford post, we also got to discussing the music coming out of the Southeastern U.S. –– Ground Zero for the Golden Age of moonshine. And that discussion came around to Bill Monroe. The Father of Bluegrass, Monroe is credited with the first “hat show,” the predecessor to rock-n-roll, a man who launched a thousand more careers, the rockabilly movement, crossover work with the Folk movement and we’re gonna go out on a limb and maybe blame him, ulitmately, for the horrible show that is the “hippy dance” in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park during the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Sorry, Bill, we calls ‘em like we sees ‘em. But, there’s a really good documentary on Bill Monroe presented by Folkstreams (here). It’s well worth the hour and a half –– it’s a strong piece of work that not only documents Bill’s work and influence over the decades, but indirectly talks about the roots of car culture in one of the most culturally rich regions of this here country. Dig on it and let us know what you think. In the meantime, we’re gonna borrow Rolfe’s banjo and get to work… poison ivyMonday, May 31st, 2010
AH, THE GOOD ‘OL DAYS: LIKE, TEN YEARS AGOThursday, April 29th, 2010
In an age when “old school” means 2005, we can’t imagine asking anyone to remember 1999, but here it is: our own Kim Mejia and Trish Ward in a San Francisco news piece on the Swing craze of the late Nineties. With movies like Jon Favreau’s “Swingers,” magazines like Leslie Rosenberg’s Atomic and Rosina Rothman’s Modern Lounge, and the early days of the Rat Rod movement, we’ll argue that those Swing days might not have been possible without the new approach to retro car culture that kicked up dust in the early Nineties. Those were heady days when retro was new again and it’s been fascinating to see how those Lindy Hoppers have weathered the last decade. Hey, it’s 2010 and new hair greases are still being concocted in bathtubs everywhere, vintage-inspired fashion is back in a big way (see this week’s PRT) and there’s a new focus on repopped vintage speed equipment (well, we mention that to make us feel good more than anything, really). So, enjoy the retro retro… GOD SAVE MALCOLM MCLAREN: 1946-2010Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Happy St. Patrick’s DayWednesday, March 17th, 2010
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so here’s the best performance from the mid-Sixties Bollywood suspense thriller and box office smash, “Gumnaam,” entitled “Jan Pehchan Ho.” Enjoy. FRIDAY MUSIC: ART BLAKEY AND HARD BOPFriday, January 29th, 2010
“Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life…” In 1955, a young Jazz drummer named Art Blakey put together a quintet of hard-living, all-nite driving, hell-raising and immensely talented musicians and called them the “Jazz Messengers.” FRIDAY MUSIC: Minor Threat, major pile of cashFriday, December 11th, 2009
So, just when you thought it was safe to chuck your old pair of Life’s A Beach “Bomb Threat” shorts that you haven’t fit in since 1983, a Minor Threat test pressing sells on Ebay for just shy of SIX-FREAKIN-GRAND. Now, sure, it was a rare test pressing. OK, it was from Minor Threat drummer Jeff Nelson’s private collection. And Jeff was co-founder of the irrefutable, indisputable Dischord Records. And OK – it came with a rare Dischord sales flyer, too. And yeah we get it – original Punk stuff (that was never supposed to last longer than the show it promoted) is going for big money to the online fights between aging punks who’ve traded in their cuffed fists for credit cards and Ebay auction swiping software… OK, this relic is worth it. For those of us who couldn’t afford the ante, here’s a taste of what fueled the fire. THE NY TIMES DISCOVERS THE QUINTESSENTIAL HOT RODTuesday, September 1st, 2009
Our good bud, Aaron Von Minden, sent this little gem over from The New York Times (here). You already love Clarence Catallo’s Deuce, but maybe it’s time to re-introduce yourself to the Beach Boys. They were pretty heavy dudes in their day…ever really listen to the words to “God Only Knows” or “Sloop John B?” Preach on, Brian… |
