REAL MAN AND CAR GUY: AARON GROTE

Only a real car guy would take something like this ‘39 Lincoln Zephyr carcass…

…hoist it up on a trailer, drag it home…

…and with a straight face and a Busch Lite in his left hand, say to the doubting onlookers, “It’ll buff out…”

This is Aaron Grote’s new “long term project:” a ‘39 Lincoln Zephyr that, when he’s done with it, will magically turn into a ‘37 Zeph “because they are a lot cooler.” Well, that may be true, but just the chance to even own a Zephyr is the bitchinest in and of itself. These cars, introduced in ‘36, are arguably one of the greatest American coupes ever designed. When you come across one of these, no matter what shape it’s in, you always pause and really, seriously, completely, weigh the options: where do I stash it and what do I tell my wife/girfriend/life partner/pets, how much cash can I bleed out of my credit card in the next hour to plunk down on this heap, where am I gonna find parts, how much cash can I bleed out of my credit card (again), the list goes on.

But the point here, is that Aaron’s doing it – he sees the mock-up in his head every time he looks at his new “Penicillin Penny” and that, alone, will keep him going (well, that and cases of Busch Lite) for a good, long time…
